December 5, 2009, 2:30 PM
A national survey says South Dakota college students graduated last year with debt that averaged $22,486 - below the national average of $23,200. Grads in Utah had the lowest average debt - $13,041, - and District of Columbia students graduated with the highest average debt level - $29,793.
The numbers are from the survey "Student Debt and the Class of 2008" by the California-based Project on Student Debt. South Dakota ranks 17th among the states in terms of graduates' debt. But the report says 79 percent of South Dakota students graduate with debt, a percentage that leads the nation.
Tuition rose 60.6 percent at South Dakota State University and 67 percent at the University of South Dakota from 2002 to FY 2010. In 2010, tuition and fees for in-state students will be about $6,900 at USD and $6,565 at SDSU.
