More Parents Touring College Campuses

June 22, 2009, 5:57 PM by Katie Janssen

More Parents Touring College Campuses
Soon-to-be college students are visiting campuses across KELOLAND, to see which one is the right fit. Now, more than ever, parents are joining their kids to get a good look at the investment they're about to make.

The Oravetz family from Monticello, Minnesota is taking its first tour of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, with dozens of other families.

"We've been to a few others in Minnesota and this is our first visit here," Kurt Oravetz, the father of a prospective college student, said.

Kurt Oravetz has gone with his daughter Kara on every visit. Not only as a travel companion, but also because he wants to see for himself where she may be spending the next four or five years. He wants to know that his tuition money is going to the right place.

"You want to make sure they're happy with where they go and that they get a good education," Kurt said.

Like many parents, Oravetz sees education as a long-term investment, and says now is not the time to waste time or money.

"You want to make sure your child really wants to go to that college because of the financial aspect," Kurt said. "You don't want them hopping around, transferring from college to college."

"I don't want to be switching schools in the middle of the year," Kara said.

Kara Oravetz is still undecided, but says when she does make her choice, it'll be the right one.

Augustana admission officials say they've always encouraged parents to go on campus visits with their kids, but are seeing more families now taking advantage of the opportunity.
