For many families, cooking supper is another chore to add to the list of things to do after work. It can be challenging to keep foods creative and tasteful, but for one KELOLAND woman, it's what she lives for.
Cooking has never become more a part of the 21st century as she brings cooking, photography and blogging to the kitchen table. With a page viewed more than 70,000 times, she's become a hit around the world.
In a quiet town of just more than 300 people, Colome offers a rural setting. In a kitchen with a view of the South Dakota landscape, it's Fran Hill's perfect backdrop for dicing and slicing.
“I'm really kind of simple and just keep it easy and want it to be fun,” Hill said.
Today, the main course for lunch is Smoked Sausage Pasta with Tomato Cream Sauce, one of her personal favorites.
“I really didn't know how to cook when I first got married. We lived on canned soups and all those sorts of things. We got tired of it and we like to eat so I basically taught myself through community cook books and recipes shared through friends,” Hill said.
Taking recipes and modifying them, adding herbs and spices until they blended the way she wanted, Hill embarked on expanding what she set out at the dinner table. She found her calling in toiling over a boiling pot of water or sizzling saucepan and after numerous requests from family and friends for her recipes, she came up with an easier way to share what goes into her creations.
“I decided it would make a great Christmas present to put together a cookbook for family and friends. I started working on that and one Christmas passed and another Christmas passed and still, I didn't have it done so I decided a blog might be a better solution,” Hill said.
A blog so she can put everything she cooks online for family and friends to recreate. Hill wanted everyone to see what the dish and ingredients look like. So she set out to teach herself another skill: photography. While she started by making her blog private, eventually the hobby grew and so did the number of people wanting to see what new creations she had to offer.
“I have a hit counter on my blog and I can see where the views are coming from and it's interesting to see the wide variety of places and people that are reading it,” Hill said.
She's had people from Asia to Europe visit her site and read up on recipes. While she's a hit online and at her own dinner table, that's how she plans to keep it for now.
“I've done some unofficial catering things for friends and family but I really just like to play rather than work,” Hill said.
As Hill puts the final touches on her lunch and tosses the fresh greens from her windowsill, this KELOLAND cook can add another dish to her blog for the online world to see and taste.
Hill also plants her own garden including some vegetables and herbs to add to her recipes and says she's tried to come up with a mixture of quick, easy and some time consuming recipes for any lifestyle.
