Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

July 28, 2012, 7:57 AM by Ben Cathey

Much-needed overnight and morning rains have started to fizzle out after hitting stable air in eastern South Dakota.  Before they completely move out, though, many areas along I-90 will end up with about a tenth of an inch.  For many spots, this is the continuation of a dry and hot pattern with today being a brief change.

Clouds will quickly leave the west and the blocking pattern sets right back up.  Highs should be into the 90s in Rapid City and the Badlands.  A couple of thunderstorms could develop over the Hills but there is not much organizing force in the west.  It should actually be the first day all month that Sioux Falls is below normal on the high (which is 84 for almost every day this month).  Clouds will be thicker in far eastern KELOLAND through much of the afternoon.

Another rain chance comes this evening for SE KELOLAND.  This mainly looks like an Iowa and Nebraska event but Sioux Falls could still get clipped by light rains for the very end of JazzFest.  Still, the chances are not as good as the quick rains we got this morning.

Apart from isolated showers in NW South Dakota and a stray Black Hills thunderstorm much of the coming workweek is looking dry.  Monday, computer models try to place minimal shower coverage overhead but the air will be very dry.  Some areas in our south could again top out at 100 or more on Tuesday & Wednesday.  Thursday the ridge will start to flatten just a little bit and that could spawn a few showers Friday.
