They say cats have nine lives, but a dog found on a busy highway this week may just prove that dogs can have a lucky streak.
A lovable lab has quite the story to tell, if only she could tell it. Sunshine, as she's been named, is eight weeks old. She was found earlier this week in a place no puppy should be.
"We found her on I-90 East, just out in the middle of the highway, someone left her out there. As far as we know that's what we think happened," Chonteaul Dean of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society said.
Sunshine has spent this week getting cleaned up and receiving proper shots at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Workers hope her next stop is a loving home and an adoption.
The story of this lab isn't entirely unique. In face, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has already taken in several animals that have been abandoned this summer.
"Sometimes it is. A lot of times with unplanned litters, people don't know what to do with the puppies afterwards. That's why we really encourage people to spay and neuter," Dean said.
The staff at the Humane Society has found Sunshine to have a very friendly personality, with the natural curiosities of a young pup. What the lab may not know is just how bad her story could have ended.
"Very lucky. Very lucky. With the heat conditions that have been out there, she's really lucky. With no water or no food; and then missing traffic too. That's another thing," Dean said.
Instead, there are many bright days ahead for Sunshine who will soon be up for adoption.
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has been extra busy lately, partly because of the hot weather. They've had to help several animals left in the heat without water.
