Officials Hold Public Meeting On Myrtle Fire

July 22, 2012, 6:33 PM by Austin Hoffman

Officials Hold Public Meeting On Myrtle Fire
PRINGLE, SD -

When the public is in danger because of wildfires, communication between residents and emergency personnel is obviously key. And it's something officials with the Myrtle Fire now have as part of their game plan.

On Sunday, officials will hold a meeting with the public to share exactly how the fight on the Myrtle Fire is going.

Public information officer Lynn Barclay says they want the public to know what's happening and who's working together to contain this fire. That's what they hope to accomplish in a meeting on Sunday evening.

"We’re going to meet in Pringle at the community center which is next to the fire station at seven o'clock and we want to be able to share the latest information that we have," Barclay said.

Part of that information is telling the residents of around 250 evacuated homes what's going on.

Castlewood volunteer firefighter Chris Schafer is one of many people part of that team working to protect them.

"You know, we're just doing what we can do,” Schafer said. “Volunteering and just helping out with anything that needs to be done."

Right now, they're working to asses any potential fire hazards around the evacuated homes so crews know what kind of equipment they'll need if the worst should happen.

"A lot of it is probably just going to be handed down to local volunteer agencies in the area for future references on just fire prevention," Schafer said.

And that’s a piece of the puzzle that Barclay wants to make sure local residents understand.

"I think it's just key that people know we're working together," Barclay said.
