If you head over to the Stewart Center for a basketball game this next season, you'll see a much different venue. A $400,000 dollar renovation is wrapping up that includes extended seating, a new paint job for the gym floor as well as major improvements to the locker room areas.
"They would avoid the locker rooms in the past. Now that's going to be an area where we can take recruits into," said Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Hesser.
When it comes to recruiting, women's basketball coach Travis Traphagen thinks the upgrades could give his program an edge over the competition.
"As a basketball coach I felt very blessed and hopefully that's going to help recruits decide that they want to come to the University of Sioux Falls," Traphagen said.
The remodel will increase capacity by adding four-sided seating around the gym. Up to 1800 can now filter in to catch a contest. That's a big reason why Hesser is confident the atmosphere will also get a boost.
"We feel like we're going to be able to fill the bleachers and provide a great experience for our current student athletes and then the ones that are going to come in and consider USF," said Hesser.
Hesser says the Stewart Center upgrades should be completed by August 1, just in time for the academic year.
