The Latest Drought Monitor

July 19, 2012, 10:07 PM by Scot Mundt

The Latest Drought Monitor

While Wednesday's rain was nice, by no means was it a drought buster.  We'll need plenty more days like that and we'll need the rain to be widespread.

The latest drought monitor was assessed on Tuesday and officially released on Wednesday, so it didn't include the latest round of rain.

Many areas have been upgraded to the severe category which is now at 45 percent of South Dakota.  This covers much of western South Dakota as well as south central and southeast KELOLAND.

While the recent rain will help north central and northeast KELOLAND, many locations can use plenty more.

Since June 1, locations in southeast KELOLAND are more than four inches below average, with Sioux Falls approaching five inches below.  Other locations are between two to three inches short.  Watertown is still slightly above average, thanks to more than five inches of rain in June, but that too has dried up in the heat.

The forecast over the next several days doesn't look much better.  It will remain hot and dry through the weekend and for much of next week.
