Ringneck Tournament Kicks Off In Sioux Falls

Ringneck Tournament Kicks Off In Sioux Falls

It's that time of year again, as the Midwest's best softball teams flood Sioux Falls to take part in the 35th annual Ringneck tournament.

The softball extravaganza brings teams from six states and Canada ranging in ages from ten to 18.

From Sherman Park to Harmodon, 144 girls softball teams will step up to the plate this weekend hoping for top notch competition.

Event coordinator Cheryl Morgan says clubs signed up for this year's tournament faster than ever.

"We start getting ready in December. We start sending out e-mails, start taking applications about January 1 and this year we filled by the middle to end of February," Morgan said.

Taking into consideration all those teams, which bring to town an average of 13 players, two coaches and add all of their families that makes for a busy few days in Sioux Falls.

"It should help it out tremendously because they're going to be looking for some place to cool off, have a nice meal, places to stay and things to do," Morgan said.

The teams will compete in a pool play format through Saturday. Bracket play is single elimination with the championship games taking place Sunday evening.

While the heat will be on the diamond and in the air, with the right preparation, there is no reason this weekend shouldn't be a great summer catch.

"I'm hoping everybody will come out and just drink a lot of water, stay hydrated, especially the teams and the coaches; they'll be doing that with their teams,” Morgan said. “With the evening games I think it's going to cool off and be a gorgeous evening to watch the games.”

The tournament is $5 for admissions each day with the proceeds going to local youth softball and future tournaments. Championship games will be held at 2:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
