When you choose to dine out, you see the final product on your plate. But for most, the conditions in which that meal was prepared are mostly a mystery. Now, South Dakotans have a new way of knowing the conditions on the other side of the counter.
South Dakota has more than 4,000 licensed restaurants to choose from for dining out. What happens in the kitchens is usually not the top worry for where to eat. But now the state has made it easier to know how clean those food cooking areas are.
The State Health Department has unveiled a website that lists those restaurants and allows you to see the latest health inspection scores.
You can search by business name, city, or even by type of business. You can click on the name of a business to see the latest inspection scores for the business. Those scores are based on a best possible score of 100. It also shows whether the business has any critical violations.
While the site just went online, the state already has plans to improve it. Beginning next year, the page will give you access to the full inspection report.
Restaurants are inspected at random at least twice each year. The Sioux Falls Health Department has listed inspection scores online for several years.
