Do you want to go fishing, but don’t have the right equipment? Well, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks along with Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation have your answer.
Together they’re offering free fishing and providing all of the necessary equipment at Family Park near 12th Street and Tea-Ellis Road in Sioux Falls every Friday evening from six p.m. to nine p.m. and every Saturday morning from eight a.m. to noon.
Fishing intern Clint Whitley helps with the event and says it’s been very successful so far.
“Today we had about 20 people come out and fish,” Whitley said. “But, at our highest we’re seen 48 or more people, which is actually more fishing rods than we have.”
Whitley says the park provides all of the necessary equipment and supplies. And the pond is stocked with rainbow trout, northern pike, largemouth bass and other varieties of fish.
Families and new fishermen have been the biggest supporters of the event.
“We had a family drive down from Vermillion a few weekends ago to come check it out and learn some fishing techniques,” Whitley said.
The first session began June 8 and the event will continue through the month of July. But, because of the success, Whitley says they are considering extending the end date.
