Allergy Sufferers Itching For Relief

June 25, 2012, 5:19 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Allergy Sufferers Itching For Relief
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

If you've been suffering from itchy eyes and a runny nose, you're not alone.  Doctor's offices have seen an increase in allergy sufferers.

This year has turned out to be a particularly bad year for allergy sufferers.  That's because our early spring also caused allergy season to start early.

Right now is the prime time for allergies because grass pollen is very heavy, and grass is the most common pollen allergy.

Dakota Allergy and Asthma Dr. Mark Bubak says if you're itching for relief, first start by closing the windows in your home and car, and use the air conditioner instead. Also wear a mask while doing yard work. If that's not enough, you have several medication options.

"The antihistamine decongestant pills are available over-the-counter. If that's not working well, the nasal steroids are the best medicine treatment, and for folks who that's not working well, allergy shots can really provide great long-lasting relief," Bubak said.

And if you're wondering whether you're suffering from a cold or allergies, Bubak says the key is really the amount of time you're sick. A cold generally doesn't last more than a week. Also, if you're itching, like have itchy eyes, that's a sign of allergies.

Evergreen trees are also pollinating right now, but fewer people are allergic to that than grass pollen.
