Primary Shakes Up SD Legislative Leadership

June 5, 2012, 11:06 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Primary Shakes Up SD Legislative Leadership
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Several South Dakota legislative leaders were knocked out in Tuesday’s primary, and there were mixed results for the candidates Governor Dennis Daugaard endorsed.

In the District 4 Republican Senate race, primary incumbent Tim Begalka knocked off Speaker of the House Val Rausch with 67 percent of the vote compared to 33 percent of the vote for Rausch. Rausch was endorsed by Daugaard in the highly-contested race in northeast South Dakota.

Senator Deb Peters beat Representative Lora Hubbel in the District 9 Republican Senate primary. Daugaard had endorsed Peters, who was the incumbent squaring off against Hubbel who was trying to move from the House to the Senate.

The other Governor Daugaard endorsed candidate who had a lead late Tuesday night was Bruce Rampelberg, who had a 57 percent to 43 percent lead over George Ferebee with 19 of 30 precincts reporting.

Senator Tom Nelson, who had the governor’s endorsement, was knocked off by Bob Ewing in Tuesday’s primary, and Michael Buckingham, who was also endorsed, lost to Representative Phil Jensen in the District 33 Senate primary.

There was also a shake up on the Democratic said where Representative Mitch Fargen, the Assistant House Minority Leader, lost in his primary to Representative Patrick Kirschman and Karen Soli who will move on to the November general election. Fargen was running in a new Sioux Falls district after moving from Flandreau.
