A Coach For Your Health

May 24, 2012, 6:06 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

A Coach For Your Health
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

People look to coaches to help them become better basketball or baseball players.  But a new type of coach could put you at the top of your health game. Health coaches provide advice on everything from nutrition to stress management.

Julia Tibbetts is taking steps towards improving her health. She's not only exercising more, but started eating better.

"It's really hard sometimes when you're a mom and have a lot of other commitments to be able to make sure I'm still taking care of myself and having healthy habits that I'm building," Tibbetts said.

So Julia decided to seek the help of a health coach. She's been sitting down with Whitney Fretham twice a month for the past three months.  Fretham aims her game at improving client's overall health.

"We work on step-by-step additions of healthy foods into your diet, as well as healthy exercise, fitness routines, balancing work and family and self," Fretham said.

Fretham says health coaches are different from many medical fields because they focus on things like exercising that prevent an illness rather than curing or dealing with it.

"Health coaching is sort of at the brink of a new health revolution in America because it is working toward those preventative measures to help people avoid the doctor bills in their later years," Fretham said.

In addition to two, 50-minute sessions every month, Fretham also gives her client food samples and handouts, along with email support between meetings.

"Health coaching is more about people who are looking for change; real, true lifestyle change. It's not a quick fix. It's not a 'loose 10 pounds in 10 days' kind of thing," Fretham said.

Since starting her sessions, Tibbetts has lost ten pounds and says she has more energy. By meeting with a coach, she's not only hoping to up her health game, but also her six-year-old daughter's.

"To be able to build some healthy habits for her; we've been able to take care of some health issues she's had with some changes we've made to our diets," Tibbetts said.

There are no requirements on who can call themselves a health coach. Fretham is currently in the Health Coach Program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City.

She charges 100 dollars a month. For more information, visit the She Lives Fit website.
