SD Board Proposes Smaller Rise In Livestock Fee

SD Board Proposes Smaller Rise In Livestock Fee
PIERRE, SD -

The state Brand Board has cut back on its plans to raise livestock inspection fees in western South Dakota.

The board wants to increase the fee by 10 cents a head. In March, the board pushed a 20-cent increase. It withdrew the proposal at the request of Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to hold a public hearing next month on a new proposal to raise the inspection fee from 80 cents to 90 cents per head.

Board members say the increase is needed to cover higher inspection costs.

The fee is charged for checking brands on cattle and horses west of the Missouri River. The inspections are used to deter livestock theft.
