Alcohol-Filled Pouches Raise Worries

May 10, 2012, 4:54 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Alcohol-Filled Pouches Raise Worries
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A product available on KELOLAND store shelves is raising worries among alcohol counselors.  The product promotes safe and responsible consumption of alcohol, but others say the packaging sends and entirely different message.

Each product is filled with one shot of alcohol. They're called "Porta shots" and come filled with rum, whiskey or vodka.

"It does draw red flags and is a bit frustrating, obviously, because it seems to make the use of alcohol okay, more convenient," Darcy Jensen of Prairie View Prevention Services said.

What's raising worries about this product is the size. It is only three by three inches which means it can easily be hidden.  Jensen says that could help teens who are sneaking alcohol around to get drunk and this product may not be something parents know to look for.

"Typically that's how kids are getting the alcohol that they're using.  its not very often that we have kids that are blatantly carrying a bottle out or carrying a package out," Jensen said.

Jensen says that this product is also worrisome for adults who may have an addiction to alcohol and the easily hidden pouch could allow them to mask their issues.

"I think the product sends a message of, let's hide our alcohol use so we don't have to deal with it," Jensen said.

Now, Jensen is hoping word of this product will spread, so parents will know what to look for. She also hopes parents and their children will talk to each other about alcohol and its dangers.

"Just because we have a nice package and a convenient to use package, doesn't make alcohol safe.  We still have alcohol poisoning, we still have kids that perceive that as something that won't happen to me," Jensen said.

The "porta shots" are available in Sioux Falls, but not everywhere.  In fact, some stores have pulled them from their shelves, while others have never sold them.
