Violence erupted Thursday in the parking lot of a busy Rapid City store.
"At 3:18 this afternoon we had a report of a stabbing in the parking lot here at Walmart. We had an officer on scene almost immediately," Police Captain Karl Jegeris said.
Police found a woman with stab wounds, but that's not all.
"The suspect was still on scene when we arrived. Another Rapid City police officer and a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper chased the suspect on foot to the north to the Days Inn motel," Jegeris said.
Inside the motel, the suspect barricaded himself in a bathroom.
"Once we gained entry into that bathroom we found that the suspect also had self-inflicted stab wounds that occurred there in the bathroom at the Days Inn," Jegeris said.
Both the suspect and the victim were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where the victim was pronounced dead.
At this time, police have not released the name of the 30-year-old victim.
There is no word on the condition of the suspect. Police hope to release more information Friday morning.
