Sioux Falls' Job Market Looking Up

April 7, 2012, 6:03 PM by Don Jorgensen

Sioux Falls' Job Market Looking Up
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

South Dakota's unemployment rate figures from last month won't be released until the middle of April, but all signs are pointing to good news.

February numbers show Sioux Falls had a 4 percent unemployment rate; statewide was 4.4 percent. That's far below the national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent.

The State Labor Department says there are literally thousands of jobs available right now and that's good news for those people still looking for work.

From contractors to call centers, the help-wanted signs are out in Sioux Falls.

"There is a bit more competition here," Capital One Operations Director Dave Herr said.

Capital One is in the process of taking over domestic credit card operations for HSBC. When we last talked to Herr back in December, he was in the process of trying to fill 400 new positions. He still needs to hire another 250.

"It's a work environment that can appeal to a lot of people.  The kind of jobs we have here are the kind of jobs that like helping people and are passionate about customer service," Herr said.

The South Dakota Department of Labor says there are a lot of businesses hiring right now, offering jobs in areas ranging from construction to health care.

That's why companies such as Capitol One continue to let people know they're still hiring hoping to soon fill empty desks.

"Sioux Falls is certainly a different employment market in that there are a lot of companies hiring here, which is great for the local market," Herr said.  "For us, we've continued to see great folks come in.  We have 150 people servicing customers already and feel really confident that we will get the 400 agents we talked about back in December by the end of the year."

Capital One's next job fair is May 17th, but you can also apply online through the Capital One website.
