Smoothies and juices may sound like a bit of a novelty. But, when done right, they can be a great source of nutrition and even give you some added health benefits.
Getting enough fruits and vegetables each day can be difficult to do. But they can be very beneficial to your heath and as simple as sipping through a straw.
"It just goes back to getting fruits and vegetables. Whether you prefer them to be juice it's really the nutrients in the fruits and vegetables that have heath benefits," Sanford Registered Dietician Teresa Beach said.
Incorporating juice into your daily diet can not only be good for your health but also boost your energy.
"I have more energy; it makes me feel better when I get up in the morning. I go a little bit longer during the day than I used to," juicer Pamela Scholz said.
Dieticians say the best way to approach juicing is exactly like Scholz is doing and use it as a supplement, not as your only meal.
"I think, depending on how people do it, it could be a helpful tool or a motivator, a good way to get started. But I wouldn't suggest it be the sole source of nutrition for an extended period of time," Beach said.
For example, you may have a busy morning and getting that quick boost may be just what you need.
"If you're going to supplement a healthy eating style to decrease added fats high choleric foods and you want to add fruits and vegetables in an easy way because of your time maybe or life style is to juice them, that would be okay," Beach said.
For Scholz she has seen what juicing can do for her, and it has even motivated her to make other healthy choices.
"Oh, it's been great; it's just been great. I mean, I live so close so, I can walk and I get that walk and it helps with a boost," Scholz said.
If you are going to use it a meal replacement, Beach says it's important to add some kind of non-fat dairy product such as milk or yogurt so you can get the protein you need as well.
