SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The new Events Center could mean expanded community development on the north side of Sioux Falls. That's the word from city administrators working on the project.
They presented an update on Monday at Carnegie Town Hall.
That new development would be anchored by some large venues that will bring people into Sioux Falls. The city expects south of Madison Street North to 60th Street North and Interstate 29 to Minnesota Avenue to see growth.
The Sioux Falls Regional Airport already brings traffic there. A new Sanford sports facility and, ultimately, the Events Center will add to it.
The team working on those plans stood in front of the city council Monday afternoon. Planners have already started the process of speaking with landowners and developers when the new building goes up.
The design work is moving along. Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether says the plan so far is to keep 85 percent of the construction dollars local by hiring area contractors.
The project design is already about 35 percent complete. The goal is to have most of the plans finished up in May.
