Storm Cycles On Track With Theory

February 2, 2012, 5:30 PM by Ben Cathey

Storm Cycles On Track With Theory
It looks like a blizzard may just miss us this weekend, but the timing of the storm is part of an emerging theory.

Though we've received some snow over the past month, the last major system to come from the southwest was 47 days ago this Saturday. While that might seem like a random number to highlight, exactly 47 days earlier another system just missed us.

The storms time out to the day with something called the Lezac Recurring Cycle. The theory states that during winter, the big weather-makers over the plains will have similar shapes and similar storm tracks. But most importantly, the big storms occur over big time jumps, which are consistent by season.

If cycle holds up, our next big storm event would time out sometime between March 20th and 25th.

But for now, with no snow on the ground, we're shaping up for a slightly warmer than average period.
