Community Responds To Turkey SOS

November 20, 2011, 10:00 PM by Hailey Higgins

Community Responds To Turkey SOS
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Feeding South Dakota has more turkeys than they know where to put after the community donated thousands of Thanksgiving birds.

"It's amazing. It is truly amazing," Executive Director Matt Gassen said.

There wasn't a single turkey in the food pantry freezer a few weeks ago. And now they have so many, they don't know where to put them all.

"We have some stored at our pantry, we have some stored out here in our Food Bank warehouse and we've also even had to have a few stored off site," Gassen said.

After a turkey SOS was called out, Gassen says 2,500 turkeys were donated by corporations, small businesses and individuals in less than one week.

Gassen says he is overwhelmed by the community's support to help the less fortunate this holiday. There are so many turkeys, no one will go without this Thursday.

"Nobody who wants one will go away from the pantry without one," Gassen said. "I tell you, we have turkeys now to ensure every family that wants to have a turkey for thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday should be able to get one."

Gassen says they will have plenty of turkey to go around on thanksgiving and even spilling over into Christmas.
