Tuesday Afternoon Business Brief

October 18, 2011, 1:43 PM

Tuesday Afternoon Business Brief
Stock prices have moved higher after an initial bout of weakness this morning. The key averages are in positive territory, and the Dow has been up more than 100 points.
  • Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says one of the big lessons learned from the financial crisis is that central banks must have a dual goal of controlling inflation while supporting the banking system. During his speech today in Boston, Bernanke said the steps taken by the Fed during the crisis have proved to be successful.
  • Fighting to remain relevant in the battle for the smartphones market, Motorola is returning to a name that helped it in the past. It is bringing back the "Razr" name, once attached to the best-selling phone in the world.
  • Starbucks has unveiled a lighter-roast coffee as the company tries to reach more customers. The so-called blonde roast marks a major departure from the company's typically dark-roasted beans.
  • Better news is in the offing for Social Security recipients. It appears they'll get a raise in January - their first increase in benefits since 2009. It's expected to be about 3.5 percent.
