Panel Working To Redraw SD Legislative Districts

PIERRE, SD -
A panel of state lawmakers is moving closer to making its final recommendations for redrawing the boundaries of South Dakota's 35 legislative districts.
The Redistricting Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to approve four districts in the Rapid City area. The committee also approved nine districts in the Sioux Falls area. But the panel's Democratic minority objected to the plan, saying it packs too many Democrats in one district while diluting Democratic strength in nearby areas.
Residents of Day and Brown counties testified against a plan to redraw district boundaries in the Aberdeen area and other counties in northeastern South Dakota. They say it would throw together far-flung areas that have little in common.
A special session of the Legislature will be held October 24 to consider the committee's recommendations.
