City Council Chair Talks About Vacancy

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Sioux Falls City Council Chair Sue Aguilar says there will be a search to replace former city clerk Debra Owen who was fired by a 5-3 city council vote last week. The council has not discussed specifics of that search yet, but Monday night's focus will be on keeping the clerk's office operating with a short-term fix.
"All this just took place last week, so there are still discussions that need to be had," Aguilar said.
According to Aguilar, those discussions will take some time. But Aguilar said the council is expected to approve naming David Bixler as acting city clerk.
"Tonight, we'll vote on a resolution to give him the necessary approval to sign documents and the like until an interim city clerk is appointed," Aguilar said.
Aguilar said Bixler's appointment will be short term, and an interim city clerk should be appointed within the next two months. And there is no timeline yet as to how long the council will search to fill the vacancy permanently.
"It really depends on where the council is and where they're planning to go. We'll take a look and I've had some council members say that it should be a national search," Aguilar said. "It will be a decision of the entire council as to how to move forward and what the process actually will be."
Bixler is currently the council's budget analyst. He was hired this summer.
