Sniffing For Allergy Remedies

August 25, 2011, 5:15 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Sniffing For Allergy Remedies
SIOUX FALLS, SD - It's a great time of year to be outdoors, but if you're like millions of Americans, your allergies may be preventing you from enjoying as much time as you'd like outside.

An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from allergies.

Dr. Mark Bubak at Dakota Allergy and Asthma says he's seen an increase in the number of allergy sufferers coming to his office in the past couple weeks.

Allergy season just started a couple weeks ago, but Bubak says it's already too late for some treatments like allergy shots and nasal steroid spray. Now he recommends antihistamines and decongestants.

"A person generally takes an antihistamine and decongestants, and I'd really recommend doing that once a days. Ones like the Claritin or Zyrtec or Allegra, and throw some Sudafed in with that," Bubak said.

Bubak says if you're wondering if you have allergies, the two biggest signs are the amount of time you're sick and if you have an itchy nose.

"When you have a cold, it doesn't itch and it usually lasts seven to ten days. Ragweed is going to last about two months in the fall, and it's day in and day out they have it," Bubak said.

Bubak says if you close your windows and doors and run your air conditioner instead that will also help your allergies.
