Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Announcement
August 17, 2011, 5:07 PM
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Sanford Health is building a world-class center for the research, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Sioux Falls.
T. Denny Sanford was there as the project was announced. His $100 million gift toward a breast cancer initiative will be used to launch Edith Sanford Breast Cancer. It will focus on research and care to decode the genetic make-up of every woman who volunteers to take part. That data will then be used by physicians and researchers to evaluate a woman's risk, identify best treatments and hopefully, end breast cancer.
The Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Center will be built on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus in Sioux Falls between the existing Sanford Cancer Center and the VanDemark Orthopedic Center buildings. Plans also include an expansion of the Roger Maris Cancer Center at Sanford's downtown campus in Fargo, North Dakota.
South Dakota native and television celebrity Mary Hart will serve as the national spokesperson for ESBC. Hart's mother is breast cancer survivor.
