Third Officer Identified In Rapid City Shooting

Third Officer Identified In Rapid City Shooting
Nick Armstrong / Tim Doyle

RAPID CITY, SD - Rapid City Police have identified the second officer injured Tuesday in a shooting that killed a third officer.

Officer Tim Doyle, 39, had surgery after being shot in the face and is now in stable condition. He is a Minnesota native and four-year veteran of the Rapid City Police Department and was serving on the Street Crimes Unit for the summer before returning as a school liaison officer.

Officials say Doyle was with Officers James McCandless and Nick Armstrong Tuesday afternoon when they approached four men who appeared suspicious. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot at the officers, killing McCandless and injuring the two others.

Officer Armstrong, 27, has been with the department for two years and joined the Street Crimes Unit in April 2010. He was born and raised in Rapid City and also had surgery Tuesday night. He is still in critical condition.

Officer McCandless, 28, was originally from Michigan and was recently engaged.

At least one of the officers had returned fire and shot the suspect. His name has not been released. But officiails have said he is Native American, in his 20's and is at Rapid City Regional Hospital. His condition is unknown.

People from the community have been placing items at a make-shift memorial for Officer McCandless at the site of the shooting.

Officers across KELOLAND are also honoring their fallen colleague. In Sioux Falls, Officer Sam Clemens says Tuesday's event is a sad reminder of the dangers all members of law enforcement face every time they go to work.

"If somebody wants to harm an officer they'er going to find a way to do it. We just try to minimize that so we don't lose one of our own. It's a tragic day when something like this happens," Clemens said.

Officers across the state are wearing black bands on their badges in remembrance of the fallen officer.
