Website Helps With Travel Finances

July 7, 2011, 10:02 PM by Angela Kennecke

Website Helps With Travel Finances
If you haven't done so already, you're probably planning some sort of road trip this summer with family or friends.

Wouldn't it be nice to know exactly how much it will cost you in gas to drive and how much at each fill-up along the way? A website promises to give you those answers. In Your Money Matters we put Cost2Drive.com to the test.

Amber Stevens and her young son are moving across the country to Indiana. But before she left, we asked her to put the website, Cost2Drive.com to the test.

Stevens plugged in the make and model of her vehicle and her destination and Cost2Drive.com told her it would cost about $99.

"Pretty much gives you a map of different routes you can take and when you need to fill up and how much it will cost you-driving time estimate and distance you'll be traveling," Stevens said.

We talked with the website's cofounder via Skype in Washington DC about how the application works.

"When you plot a route out, we take your vehicle, figure out range and find cheapest gas for refueling points along the way. We can estimate where refueling points are and then we search through 100,000 gas stations through U.S, where those refueling points are, so it will help you find out where you need to refuel along the way," Jim Kovarik of Cost2.Drive.com said.

The website will even show you the carbon footprint you leave behind and compare how much it would cost to fly.

"Yes, in fact I was looking at how much it would cost to drive from here to Mt. Rushmore in your neck of the woods and it was $242 each way, but the flight was $450 dollars.. almost equal costs," Kovarik said.

The site says it strives to be as accurate as possible.

"There are a lot of variables driving from one point to the other. No one can be exactly accurate. But we're told from our users we're very close, Kovarik said.

Stevens says it's helping her budget for her trip.

"You can't just go without knowing how much you're going to be spending. You pretty much need to know how much you're going to be spending. That way you don't go over budget and don't have enough to get there," Stevens said.

Amber has arrived in Ft. Wayne, Indiana just fine and it actually cost $90. Pretty close to the website's estimate. Cost2Drive.com is also in the process of adding hotel, restaurant and attraction suggestions along the way and is developing a mobile app.
