Summer Fevers

June 8, 2011, 5:10 PM by Kelli Grant

Summer Fevers
Kids seem to get sick more often in the winter, but summertime can bring its fair share of viruses and bugs too. And that can bring on a summer fever.

The younger the baby, the more important it is to get them to a doctor as their temperature rises. Doctors say many of us will be exposed to a viral infection over the summer and will develop a fever and headache. In adults it can last a day or two, but sometimes it can be tough to tell if a child has a fever or is just hot because of the outside temperature. So it's best to just follow this rule of thumb.

"Again, the younger the infant then you don't leave it to chance, the child should be seen. Older infants, young children with fevers, if a fever comes down with Tylenol or Motrin and the child is still playful, that's a child that can be watched," Pediatrician Dr. Johanna Goldfarb said.

How your child is acting is also a good gauge. If they don't seem right to you, they should probably be seen by a doctor.

In other health news, as summer kicks into full gear, parents of newborns and toddlers need to take special care to protect their kids from getting sunburn. According to a new report, the changes that lead to skin cancer may actually begin during a baby's first year, when an infant's skin is most vulnerable to burns and sun damage.
