Gov. Calls For 'Country Club' Evacuation
June 3, 2011, 9:50 AM
DAKOTA DUNES -
Governor Dennis Daugaard is now strongly urging people specifically in the "Country Club" area in Dakota Dunes to evacuate by 11:59 p.m. Friday.
That includes homes on Monterey Trail, East and West Pinehurst Trail, Doral Lane and La Costa Lane, as well as all homes south of those streets. They should assume they won't be able to return for up to two months. It does not apply to areas known as the Meadows and the Prairie
At midnight, no one will be allowed back into the "Country Club" area. Officials are now going door-to-door to let those people know about the evacuation request.
The evacuation is not mandatory but Union County Sheriff Dan Limoge strongly encouraged residents to comply.
"We are making this request to protect residents from significant danger. Once the water level rises, we may not be able to respond to emergency calls in a timely fashion," Sheriff Limoge said.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Dakota Valley Schools in North Sioux City.
