SF Council Could Spend $3.8 Million On Streets

SF Council Could Spend $3.8 Million On Streets
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls City Council has an extra $3.8 million to spend. Now members must decide where it will go. The council can spend the money on infrastructure needs this year, or save it to use as a down payment on the Events Center.

The money is left over from large projects that came in under budget last year. Monday, they heard what the options are for spending the money on street projects. Public works director Mark Cotter told the council about three different street projects that could be paid for this summer.

"Priority one is 41st Street with the volume of calls and the number of vehicles in that section. We get about 37,000 vehicles per day in that section, so we immediately went to that," Cotter said.

Putting new pavement on 41st Street between Western Avenue and Minnesota Avenue is one of the top priorities for the city.

Another top project is putting asphalt over Minnesota Avenue from 22nd Street to I-229, and Marion Road from Madison to 60th Street.

Those three projects combined cost $1.8 million, but most importantly, those are projects that can happen this summer.

"We just need to keep that in mind is that it needs to be something we can utilize and get done right away this season," city council chair Greg Jamison said.

But it will be up to the council to decide whether that money is spent on streets or saved.

The council is also looking at putting in a new scoreboard and lighting at the Arena, as well as making improvements at a fire station, a few libraries, Carnegie Town Hall and City Hall.

The council plans to hold a work session next week to make a decision on spending the money or saving it for an Events Center.
