SIOUX FALLS, SD -
With gas prices now hovering around the $4 a gallon mark, you may be reconsidering your summer travel plans. But according to the latest Orbitz travel survey, while 63 percent of respondents say gas prices will play a factor in their summer travel plans, 81 percent of consumers plan to take a vacation this year. And it may be a better bargain to fly than drive in some cases.
For the 74 percent of consumers who say they'll spend about $2,000 on this year's summer vacation, there are options available.
"There are different things you can do. The days you fly, the times you fly, the hotels you chose. Anything in city or close to, downtown Chicago, LA, downtown DC, they're going to price higher. If you can be out a little bit further in suburbs, do car rental, you're going to save money,” Lorie Buus of All About Travel said.
The top three destinations are Orlando, Las Vegas and Seattle. But you'll get a better deal out of Sioux Falls to number four on the list: Los Angeles. For a four night stay that includes airfare, hotel and car rental, Buus says a family of four can go for $1750.
"We always try to look for hotels that offer fourth night free, complimentary continental breakfast, some of the perks that will help in saving your family vacation," Buus said.
If you're willing to drive to Omaha, a family of four going to Tampa, Florida, for four nights with airfare, hotel and car rental runs $1575.
"This summer, a lot of car rental agencies are offering mid-sized cars for price of compact cars," Buus said.
Or if you decide to give the kids a civics lesson in Washington, D.C., you can fly out of Sioux Falls, get hotel and airfare for $1840 for a family of four. Instead of car rental, this trip includes public transportation.
"So you look for that too, your shuttle transfers, destinations that have trolley service, bus service or possibly train service to get into the city," Buus said.
Whatever your destination, the time to find the best price is now.
"This is May. A lot of people have already scheduled their summer vacations so we're running out of space, which will affect your price. If there are not a lot of seats left, your price is going to be higher," Buus said.
Buus also priced the most popular destination, Orlando for us and found a family of four can go for about $2100.
