HURON, SD -
The City of Huron doesn't have a permanent police chief, and now there's an attempt to recall Mayor David McGirr.
Huron resident Brandy Dejean is helping collect signatures for the petition drive and tells KELOLAND News the movement is tied to action taken against former Police Chief Doug Schmitt.
Schmitt made controversial comments on March 7, 2011 before a state senate committee regarding a bill on illegal immigration in South Dakota. In those comments, he mentioned two processing plants in the area but not by name.
Later that week, the city placed Schmitt on administrative leave and on March 31, 2011, the Huron City Commission accepted Schmitt's resignation.
Dejean says that's in violation of freedom of speech, and that's the main drive behind the petition.
Now petition supporters are hanging up signs and hope to collect enough signatures to send the petition to the state. If it's approved, people in Huron would then vote on the recall.
