Weather Creates Hazardous Conditions On I-29

SUMMIT, SD - Winter weather in Northeast South Dakota is creating some dangerous driving conditions.

Safe Travel USA shows Interstate 29 in the Summit area is icy and slippery and officials say they've responded to crashes involving semi trucks between mile markers 198 and 207 in the northbound lanes.

Codington and Grant County officials say one semi truck is jackknifed just south of the Summit exit, which you can see in the photo.

The Grant County Sherif's Office says around 4:00 a.m. another semi near the South Shore exit lost control on the ice, hit a bridge, went through a guard rail, and started on fire.  Both the driver and passenger were able to get out safely but officails did detour traffic for about an hour.  The semi is a total loss.

An employee at the Coffee Cup Fuel Stop say a third semi was involved in a crash on the Summit bridge over the interstate. You can hear from an employee at the Coffee Cup by clicking on the player to the right.

Officials also say there are several cars in the ditch and crashes at the interstate exits but the Codington County Sheriff's office says there are no reports of injuries. Slippery conditions also made it difficult for rescue crews to respond to all the incidents.

The interstate is still open.
