Futuristic Technology At Avera Heart Hospital

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Surgeons and specialist at the Avera Heart Hospital are now getting a futuristic look at the heart and the anatomy that surrounds it.
It's technology that right now can't be found anywhere else in KELOLAND.
Want to see something that looks and acts like it's from the future? Take a step inside the new hybrid operating lab at the Avera Heart Hospital.
1,200 square feet make room for more specialists, surgeons, nurses and everyone else needed to save your heart.
“This room is really designed to do angiographic evaluation of patients, a long repair of blood vessels that perhaps are narrowed or completely blocked off,” Dr. Mike Bacharach, a vascular specialist with North Central Heart Institute, said.
It's the only lab of its kind in operation in the region. This robot allows for less x-ray exposure but also the most advanced 3-D imaging you can find.
“It does allow much improved imaging, which is very critical for determining how you're gonna repair something, how big is that blood vessel, how large a stent is going to be used,” Bacharach said.
The word hybrid essentially means this room has two functions. It can operate as a cath lab, repairing things from the inside out. But it can also serve as an operating room with LED lighting, if an open procedure was needed.
That means two procedures can happen in the same room at the same time.
“There are very few now that are in operation. This will be the first certainly in the Dakota region,” Bacharach said.
It's a large step forward in vascular medicine. In the past, these kinds of images and procedures were not possible especially with complex cases.
“It makes all these procedures potentially faster and more important, safer,” Bacharach said.
So when will this room be operational? Next Wednesday four patients will come through this lab.
