BROWN COUNTY, SD -
Strong winds and 15 inches of new snow made driving nearly impossible in the Aberdeen area Sunday night. One couple found that out the hard way when they got stuck on their way home. The miscue and eventual rescue were all caught on camera.
Our Aberdeen skycam is set up on the northwest side of the Hub City. As we were getting ready for the 10 o'clock news Sunday night, we spotted a car heading out town that soon found itself in deep trouble.
The driver was able to bust through several drifts before their luck ran out. That's when KELOLAND News contacted Brown County authorities.
"Another deputy and I tried multiple routes to try to get to the couple that were stranded in the vehicle but roadways were just drifted too bad," Brown County Deputy Sheriff Jim Sorensen said.
The driver got out and shoveled his way out of one drift but wasn't able to get very far before getting stuck again. So the deputies called in more help.
"So we contacted Aberdeen Fire and Rescue and they had their snow cat machine and they were able to make contact with the couple," Sorensen said
When they arrived, the husband was gone. He had set-off for his farm on foot hoping to get his tractor and pull the car out of the snow. But he didn't need it. Rescuers loaded the wife into the snow cat and took her home to meet up with her husband.
A safe ending to a stressful situation that may of been avoided to begin with.
