Sanford Announces Use Of $100,000,000 Gift

January 21, 2011, 6:04 PM by Kelli Grant

Sanford Announces Use Of $100,000,000 Gift
SIOUX FALLS, SD - It's been nearly a week since Denny Sanford's latest gift was confirmed. And Friday, we now know exactly how the Sanford health system plans to use the $100,000,000.

Officials at Sanford have remained tight-lipped all week, saying only that the announcement about how Denny Sanford's $100,000,000 gift would be used, wouldn't be made until mid-August.

KELOLAND News has uncovered a document which details exactly how Sanford Health plans to use this most recent donation. According to the document, Sanford's gift will establish a Sanford Health National Breast Cancer Institute initiative which will create a world-class center for the research, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

There is no word tonight on where the research facility will be. But Sanford Health is no stranger to breast cancer research. Kristi Egland has been working to develop a simple blood test for the early detection of breast cancer for nearly two years.

One in eight women are diagnosed with the cancer today. And 98 percent of the cases detected early, can be cured by doctors. According to the document, the research funded by Denny Sanford's $100,000,000 dollar gift will begin with the recruitment of senior-level scientists and oncologists and will involve patient care.

Denny Sanford's mother died when he was just four years old from breast cancer. A statement released today from Sanford Health Foundation President Brian Mortenson confirms that Mr. Sanford's $100,000,000 gift will launch a national breast cancer initiative.

He goes on to say that this is a very personal cause for nearly everyone, whether it be with a mother, wife, sister, daughter or friend. The health system still plans on unveiling the new breast cancer initiative the third week of August.
