SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Members of the Augustana band are getting ready to travel more than 6,000 miles from home for an Egyptian tour. Students will not only play on several international stages, but also a chance for them to be immersed in another world for three weeks.
The group of 71 students, along with Band Director Bruce Ammann, will spend 20 days traveling, touring and taking in the sights.
"It's a world I've never been in so I think everyone here is going to be surprised by everything," said senior trumpet player Collin Block.
"I don't think it's going to be like anything we can imagine," sophomore clarinet player Alli Michaelis said.
The trip is the fourth overseas trip for the Augustana band and the first to Egypt. As it turns out, this group will be one of the first collegiate bands to perform in the African country. Students got to pick the location, and will be playing on several stages.
"Cairo University, Alexandria University, Luxor University, Aswan University, those are the locations where students will perform for and interact with college students," Ammann said.
The students have been practicing all day, every day in preparation for the trip. They've also been reading about the culture and studying up on Egypt.
"We've had classes giving us a brief history, an overview, what to expect, then more rehearsals and practicing," Michaelis said.
The students will learn a lot, but they'll also be sharing their culture and traditions, using the international language of music.
"Interact and make friends with students, share a common bond, I think they'll realize this world is a pretty good place to be in," Ammann said.
"What we take away is going to be something that stays with us forever," Block said.
Students leave January 9th and return January 30th. They'll receive three credits as part of an international studies course.
