SIOUX FALLS, SD -
We now know the names of both the driver and the victim in Wednesday night's deadly truck-bicycle crash in southwest Sioux Falls.
Police have identified the victim as 49-year-old Kevin Lee Rogers of Sioux Falls.
Police say Rogers was westbound riding his bicycle along 57th Street when an eastbound pickup driven by 42-year-old David Julius Bendt of Sioux Falls swerved suddenly into Rogers near Galway Avenue. Rogers died at the scene. Bendt ended up in a water retention pond.
Police say Bendt told them he blacked out and doesn't remember the crash. Investigators are trying to figure out how fast he was driving at the time.
"We check the mechanical conditions of both vehicles involved; the state of mind of all the drivers involved. Talk to witnesses," Sioux Falls Police Lt. Jerome Miller Said.
Bendt has been charged with DWI and vehicular homicide. He's expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
