SIOUX FALLS, SD -
It's a dark day for some Sunshine Foods customers. Hy-Vee is buying the Sunshine stores on West 10th Street and East 57th Street in Sioux Falls, along with one in Windom, Minnesota.
Under the agreement, the Sunshine on East 10th Street will close later this month. The sale means shoppers will have fewer options for groceries.
News that Hy-Vee is buying two Sunshine Foods stores and closing one on East 10th Street caught some shoppers off guard.
"I guess I'm shocked and a little bit sad because when I'm in Sioux Falls, I like to stop here on my way back to Brandon," Shari Sunne said.
Addy Carlson has shopped at this Sunshine for a long time.
"When I moved over here from the west side about 12 years ago, I was so grateful we had a Sunshine on this side especially for their meats. Everybody talks about their meat freshly done and of course, you get so well acquainted with the help it's like family," Carlson said.
"In our business, you sell when you have opportunity, you don't sell when you want," Sunshine Foods general manager Brent Bosch said.
Sunshine Foods General Manager has received offers before, but the timing was right to make the sale.
Bosch wouldn't disclose terms of the sale, but did say this will allow Sunshine to continue to grow as it heads in a different direction.
"Long term, we plan on concentrating on our rural markets. We plan on replacing some stores, getting in some rural communities we're not currently in," Bosch said.
But these customers will miss their Sunshine.
"I feel really bad. I go to Hy-Vee some too, of course, but Sunshine has just been a staple I think for a lot off people," Carlson said.
"Everybody is so personable and so kind and it's that small town feeling that you can get in Sioux Falls too and I really like that. I'm going to miss them," Sunne said.
Sunshine's downtown location will stay with the company but is having some renovations. The stores in neighboring communities will not close.
