JazzFest Begins Three-Day Run

July 15, 2010, 4:55 PM by Perry Groten

JazzFest Begins Three-Day Run
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Crowds are gathering in Yankton Trail Park for the opening night of JazzFest, where this year, good music comes in three's. JazzFest expands to three days. Organizers hope a longer JazzFest will provide a boost during a down economy that's brought nothing but the blues.

Organizers hope opening night at JazzFest draws between 10,000 and 15,000 people. Each new concert-goer inside Yankton Trail Park is important to the music festival since corporate sponsorships and donations are down.

"So we're hoping that additional 10,000 to 15,000 people will bring us some added money for the festival, help us continue to make this bigger and better every year," Rob Joyce of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society said.

JazzFest is beginning a day earlier in order to be more schedule-friendly to families that couldn't otherwise make it here.

"We've got a lot of people that are local that say this will be the first year that we can come to JazzFest because we always go to our lake cabin. Now we can go on Thursday and still go Friday and Saturday to our cabin," Joyce said.

The prelude to JazzFest began way back on Sunday as crews starting preparing Yankton Trail Park for the extra day.

"So, it's been a long week," Joyce said.

The extra day presents extra challenges for the volunteers who help put on JazzFest. Instead of taking off work on Friday alone, now they have to take off both Thursday and Friday.

"So, there's a lot more sacrifice. The most important resource we have is our volunteers and we're hoping that they're just as excited about the three days as we are," Joyce said.

Back in 2000, JazzFest expanded from a one-day event to two days. Attendance jumped that year, and organizers are hoping a three-day event will do the same this year.
