Regents: Student Athletes Make The Grade
May 13, 2010, 11:16 AM
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
A report to the Board of Regents shows that athletes at the state's public universities had a slightly higher grade point average and took more credit hours than students not involved in competitive athletics.
The board asked for the annual report starting in 2003 to make sure athletics isn't overtaking academics as a priority. About 8 percent of incoming students each year compete in athletics, and about 10 percent of all university students are athletes.
The latest report for the 2008-09 school year measures academic performance in seven areas.
Proficiency testing shows that athletes generally have better math scores but score lower in English, science reasoning and writing.
