The storms moved into Ziebach County late Wednesday afternoon. Ziebach County Sheriff Robert Menzel says as many as 10 tornadoes were spotted in the area by authorities and storm chasers.
Straight-line winds sheared the roofs off some houses and wrecked mobile homes.
"It's like [the mobile homes] kind of disintegrated," Menzel said.
One mobile home toppled over onto a vehicle with a man still inside the vehicle. He was taken to a Bismarck hospital. Other minor injuries have been reported.
"It looks like a war zone," Menzel said.
Winds also ripped off the roof of a building that would have acted as a temporary shelter, forcing displaced residents to stay with neighbors and family instead.
"Everybody is shocked," Menzel said.
Power poles toppled along the highway, leading to overnight electrical outages for most of the town.
Approximately 460 people live in Dupree, which is about 100 miles northwest of Pierre.
