Sioux Falls Highschools Best In The Nation

May 19, 2006, 5:14 PM by Kelli Grant

Sioux Falls' three Public High Schools are among the best in the nation.
In the May 8th issue of Newsweek magazine 1200 public schools in the country were given top honors for preparing their students for college and Sioux Falls is leading the way in South Dakota.

High schools students across the country are up for the challenge, especially in South Dakota.

Lincoln High Principal Valerie Fox says, "For the whole school district its pretty much a validation that we're on the right course."

Ranking just shy of the one thousandth spot, Lincoln High school finished at 1,001.

Fox says, "Kids are always amazing. I think they will always rise to occasion no matter what. If you think they're going to do it, they're going to do it."

The ranking is a reflection of how many students take advanced placement tests divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Washington Principal Bill Hoff says, "It speaks very well for the quality of education in Sioux Falls."

Hoff says he's proud of his school's spot at 1,141.
He says, "When you hear the numbers and you say you're in the top thousand and you think, "What's the big deal about that?" And yet when you consider that there are over 27 thousand high schools it's really the top 4 percent or 5 percent of high schools."

This list shows that Sioux Falls students aren't afraid to test their skills - Enrollment in Advanced Placement classes has grown by 73 percent in the last 5 years.

Dr. Lisa Hansen, AP Coordinator at Roosevelt says, "It's a great honor to be recognized to be in the top one thousand in the United States."

Hansen says sitting at the 904th spot says a lot about local students.

"I have the upmost respect for those students to be able to challenge yourself and have that opportunity in high school," she says.

Roosevelt High School was also recently awarded the Siemen Award. It's one of 50 schools to receive the award and a one thousand dollar grant for their AP math and science classes.
