Evidence Of Catholic Coverup

November 3, 2005, 11:58 PM by Lou Raguse

Evidence Of Catholic Coverup
There's more evidence the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese was aware that one of its own priests was sexually abusing children.

In a taped confession, Father Bruce MacArthur admits to abusing about 30 children during his priesthood. He worked in churches across KELOLAND from 1953 to 1973.

Judy DeLonga was one MacArthur's victims. In 2003 she filed a lawsuit against the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese, claiming the church knew about the abuse and did little to stop it.

The suit was settled out of court this week, but the investigation in her case uncovered several letters between Bishops concerning MacArthur's sexual abuse.

When complaints of his abuse came forward, the church transferred and gave him psychological treatment, but never removed his priesthood.

Judy DeLonga was not the first child abused by Catholic Priest Bruce MacArthur.

Here are two complaints, sent to then Sioux Falls Bishop Lambert Hoch, dated February 1965. Parents state MacArthur sexually abused their daughters in a Ramona, South Dakota church rectory while the girls helped count envelopes.

And this was after the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese sent MacArthur to treatment twice.

When the church learned of the abuse allegations, it transferred MacArthur for rehabilitation, but never removed him from his service.

Even after he pleaded guilty in 1978 and served prison time for attempting to rape a hospitalized woman, MacArthur continued to serve the church.

Here's a letter dated 1990 from Sioux Falls Bishop Paul Dudley recommending MacArthur for work as a priest. But Dudley goes on to ask that MacArthur not have regular involvement with young people.

In a 1992 letter, Dudley asked MacArthur's bishop in San Antonio to check on the priest. That was after a woman here contacted Dudley and spoke of her abuse as a child.

And in his own letter to Dudley, MacArthur even points out that Dudley withheld the facts of the abuse when he was transferred.

He writes: facts so abhorrent, that I refuse to acknowledge them except to my confessor - these facts that you so adroitly suppressed for my sake.

MacArthur currently lives in St. Louis at a church-run center for pedophile priests.
The Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese is asking any other victims of MacArthur to contact them.
