Breaking The Hot And Dry Pattern

July 20, 2012, 6:13 PM by Scot Mundt

Breaking The Hot And Dry Pattern

In the Storm Center, we're looking for any signs to break our warm and dry weather pattern and we're finally seeing some.

The first sign is the scattered showers and storms we've been seeing in parts of KELOLAND.

Northern South Dakota is getting some rain as well as south central South Dakota. This is an indication that the dome of hot and dry air is either slowly moving east or breaking down. The second sign is the warming temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, it's a sign that El Niño is trying to kick in. Many forecast models are indicating the Pacific waters will continue to warm into the fall.

This should pan out to be a good thing, as El Niño will help break down our current heat ridge, which is responsible for the hot and dry weather for much of the United States. A storm system is expected to move onshore in the Pacific Northwest this weekend and could be an indicator that an El Niño pattern is taking shape.

This could all mean better chances for rain and cooler weather as we go into August. But droughts are hard to break, so let's approach it with cautious optimism.
