The search continues for an Omaha fugitive in eastern South Dakota.
Oscar Herrera-Menjivar, 31, escaped early Saturday morning near Spencer, South Dakota, from a transport van.
Herrera-Menjivar has actually been on the run from law enforcement ever since the end of May.
Court documents say the Omaha man raped a 14-year-old girl, who he met on Facebook, on May 25th. He then fled to Florida six days later after the girl reported the crime to law enforcement.
An Omaha fugitive task force along with U.S. Marshals tracked down Herrera-Menjivar near Fort Meyers, Florida, and arrested him on June 25th.
Herrera-Menjivar was being transported back to the Omaha area by a private company over the weekend when they stopped for gas just off Interstate 90 near Spencer at 2:00 a.m. early Saturday. Herrera Menjivar somehow escaped their custody and headed south.
South Dakota authorities searched for the fugitive this weekend but still have not located him.
The McCook County Sheriff says they are no longer actively searching for Herrera-Menjivar; instead they are following up any leads they receive.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is urging drivers not to pick up hitchhikers and asking homeowners to report any suspicious activity in the area.
We'll have much more on Herrera-Menjivar's crime and why he is currently facing a life in prison sentence coming up tonight on KELOLAND News.
