Noem Begins Re-Election Campaign

June 9, 2012, 10:15 PM by Lindsey Branwall

Noem Begins Re-Election Campaign
BROOKINGS, SD -

South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem addressed a local VFW conference in Brookings Saturday morning, but many are wondering what her next step is now that Matt Varilek has been selected as her Democratic challenger.

Noem says she'll be visiting even more groups across the state now that election season is in full swing.

“We're looking forward to getting the campaign running and on the ground,” Noem said.

Part of getting things running is stopping at areas all across the state.

“[It’s] getting to that time in season; now that their primary is over, I’m sure that we'll be coming up with a lot of activities and getting a lot volunteers ready to tell what we've been working on in Washington, D.C., and doing on behalf of South Dakota,” Noem said.

At Saturday morning's conference, the Congresswoman told veterans about Washington, D.C., legislation that affects them. She even garnered a few chuckles.

“Anywhere there's people, we'll be visiting with them much like we do year round,” Noem said.

Noem says there's nothing to laugh about when it comes to Varilek’s accusations, particularly about her attendance and participation in Washington.

“We've given all of the facts to everyone; we've shown we’re on three committees. I'm on nine subcommittees; many of those are meeting at the same time,” Noem said.

Despite her contention, Noem understands it'll be an issue as November draws closer, which is why she's preparing to talk with as many people as she can, and Varilek, face-to-face.

“We'll certainly be looking at visiting with people across the state—communicating with them. We'll have town-halls.  We'll have meetings; we'll have debates," Noem said.

The Congresswoman says she's already touring the state next week. She has stops planned in Mitchell, Madison and Sioux Falls.
