Yoga For Two

January 18, 2013, 6:06 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Yoga For Two
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Between the diapers, the feedings and all that laundry, new moms can sometimes struggle to find time to work out. But a new class in Sioux Falls not only allows babies in the room, but infants are involved in the work out.

When you enter the gym, you likely expect to see adults lifting weights and running on exercise machines.  But a new class in Sioux Falls is using a different type of workout tool: babies and mothers are teaming up to exercise in the "Yoga for Two" class.

"I'm just getting back into working out after my pregnancy. I had a Caesarean, so I had to wait the eight weeks before I could get back into the gym," Gloria Peterson said.

Peterson loves the fact that she can bring two-month-old Cruz with her to class.

"He likes to go out and about. We try to get out every day so this is a nice place to go," Peterson said.

"This is a great opportunity to do something for yourself, but you don't have to feel guilty about leaving baby with somebody else," instructor Kendra Brouwer said.

Brouwer leads the class, which gives parents or caregivers a chance to work out while bonding with their baby.

"A little massage and some activity for baby, some interaction, some tracking activities," Brouwer said.

The class is for parents and babies ages six weeks to crawling.

"Because you want them to be able to stay with you," Brouwer said. "Plus you meet other moms and people who are in the same stage of life as you."

While Peterson enjoys the class, Cruz, like other babies can get fussy. That's expected in this class.

"Babies need to eat. Babies need to do other baby things, so it's totally whatever you need to do. Diaper changing and feeding is allowed, absolutely," Brouwer said.

It's an open, exercise environment that Peterson hopes will not only be helpful for her but also baby Cruz.

"I love the benefits yoga gives me, so I'm hoping he can reap some of those benefits as well," Peterson said.

The Yoga For Two class at Santosha Hot Yoga started in October.
